Your family has threatened you, or you are afraid they will
It has gone beyond shouting. Your phone has been taken, or you are not allowed out alone. A brother has said what he will do if you see that person again. Or nothing has been said yet, and you know your family well enough to be frightened. In parts of Punjab, as elsewhere, some couples face danger, and this page is written for them first.

No forced outcomes
Guidance on timing and approach, without guarantees.
Consider a young woman from a village near Ludhiana who is seeing a man from another community. A cousin sees them together. That evening her father says she will not return to college. Her uncles arrive. She is told a match will be fixed within the month.
Most family opposition, however fierce, stays within words. But where honour is believed to be at stake, some relatives use confinement, forced engagement or violence. If you recognise this, the first task is not persuasion. It is safety, and knowing that the law is on your side.
A consultation can help you think clearly and plan. We are not a legal or protection service and will direct you to those who are. No astrological remedy is a substitute for protection, and we will never suggest that it is.

If you face immediate threat, call 112 or the Women's Helpline on 181. Tell a trusted friend, teacher or colleague what is happening. Keep your identity documents, proof of age and some money where you can reach them.
Speak to a lawyer. Adult couples can approach the police or the High Court for protection, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court hears many such petitions. Do not announce your plans to relatives who have threatened you. Persuading the family can come later, from a place of safety, and sometimes through respected elders or the panchayat once tempers have cooled.
The session is online and confidential; join from wherever you can speak freely. We listen and help you order your next steps. Birth details are not required.
No, if you are both adults and consenting. A lawyer can advise on your specific situation.
They are required to. If the local response is poor, a lawyer can approach senior officers or the court.
